Lerche has stated that for a special example of a highly relativistic plasma this criterion must be replaced by an extremely different one, namely, instability for P~> P11 only. It is here shown that, upon correction of a mathematical error, the criterion for instability in Lerche's plasma becomes -0.112 <Bo2/2ir(Plt - .Pi) < 1, which is much more like the non-relativistic criterion. It is also shown that, in spite of convergence difficulties during intermediate steps, power series in the wavenumber k happen to give the correct answer for small k, in contradiction to Lerche's assertion. It is suggested that the behavior of the firehose instability is not highly sensitive to the exact distribution of particle velocities.
