Resumo

Just when endodontic practice began in a crude way is unknown. Although the origin of endodontics has been lost in the mists of antiquity, historical facts seem to converge on Pierre Fauchard (1678-1761) as the founder of modem dentistry. It was he who dispelled the tooth worm legend that was inscribed on an Assyrian cuneiform clay tablet. The following is an English version of the 1607 folklore of the worm theory and the fumigation theory to treat toothaches due to worms (Weinberger, B. W. An Introduction to the History of Dentistry. St. Louis: CV Mosby, 1948:25).
