ResumoThe critic Pierre Restany named Nouveau Réalisrne, yet throughout its duration he struggled to theorize and unify the artists he assembled as a group. Connected by varied appropriation strategies and a reaction against Art Informel painting, those who signed the editioned manifesto written over Yves Klein's emblematic colors of blue, pink, and gold—Arman, Francois Dufrene, Raymond Hains, Klein, Martial Raysse, Daniel Spoerri, Jean Tinguely, and Jacques Villegle (Cesar, Gerard Deschamps, Mimmo Rotella, and Niki de Saint-Phalle joined in 1961)—could agree only that “Nouveau Réalisme = new perceptual approaches of the real” and that together they constituted “a collective singularity.”
