ResumoBlack single crystals of Ti 0.33 Ta 0.67 O 2 have been prepared by CO 2 -LASER techniques heating a mixture of TiO and Ta 2 O 5 to T > 2000 °C. The titanium tantalum oxide crystallizes with tetragonal symmetry, space group D 14 4h -P4 2 /mnm, lattice constants a = 4.7344(6) Å c = 3.0504(2) Å, Z = 2. Ti 0.33 Ta 0.67 O 2 represents the compound TiTa 2 O 6 with rutile structure because of the statistical distribution of Ti 2+ and Ta 5+ . The composition of rutile-type compounds is discussed in more general terms.
