ResumoThe LMJ (Laser Megajoule) Project was approved by the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) in 1993. The LMJ is a major component of the French Stockpile Stewardship program (named `Simulation' by CEA) as the National Ignition Facility is part of the US Science Based Stockpile Stewardship Program. An evaluation of the feasibility (Avant Projet Sommaire) describing the technical, financial and schedule aspects of the project was completed in 1994. In 1995, the French Ministry of Defense authorized the Project and preparation of the advanced design report. The CEA laboratory, CESTA, near the City of Bordeaux, has been chosen for the project site.
