Resumo

▪ Based on estimates by the Environmental Protection Agency of the amount of yard trimmings to be generated in coming years, the author calculates that up to 17.1 million tons will be composted in 1996 — the year by which existing state bans on landfill disposal of yard trimmings will all be in effect. Assuming a 50 percent weight reduction through the composting process, up to 8.5 million tons of end product will be generated in 1996. While the estimates provided in this paper are based on assumptions that could be changed by many factors, the calculations do provide springboards for asking questions regarding the composting infrastructure in terms of whas is expected to be in place in terms of educational needs, collection needs, production facilities and effective markets.
