ResumoThis paper investigates experimentally the backmixing effect on the perfornwnce of a pilot-scale hydrodesulfurization reactor when both gas and liquid are passed cocurrently and upward through the reactor. The liquid feedstock used was 36% reduced Kuwait atmospheric tower bottoms crude. The results show that the conversions of sulfur, metals and asphaltene removal reactions all decrease with an increase in the gas and liquid flow rates (at constant temperature and pressure). These results are explained on the basis of backmixing in the reactor. For a very shallow catalyst bed it is also shown that upflow operation gives much better conversions for all the reactions than downflow operation under the same reaction conditions.
