Die Infektionskrankheiten des Menschen und ihre Erreger, by Arthur Grumbach and Otto Bonin, 2 vol, ed 2; 1,958 pp, 172 illus., $92.50, 370 marks, Stuttgart, Georg Thieme Verlag (New York, Intercontinental Medical Book Corp), 1969. Gsell and Mohr present two excellent volumes on bacterial disease. These volumes, the second of a three-part series on infectious disease, belong to a new edition of Handbuch der Inneren Medizin . Like the first two volumes on viral disease already reviewed ( JAMA 102: 169, Dec 4, 1967), each chapter is a monograph dealing with a group of organisms and the diseases which they cause. Authorship is international. The organization, printing, and format are consistent and excellent, and the monographs are suited for quick reference as well as for thorough and enjoyable reading. The sections on microbiology, immunology, prophylaxis, epidemiology, and therapy are balanced, but with a wholesome emphasis upon clinical course and complications. The many
