ResumoTeaching and research activities are historically performed with the use of animals in search of knowledge and benefits to both of them. This article is based on the existence of a new paradigm for animal use in academic studies, and aims to discuss how science applied to laboratory animals, a common practice by students of Medicine and Biological Sciences at the Federal University of Rio Grande (FURG), contributes to academic and professional training. The conflicts generated by this issue have become clear in the points raised in this article, revealing the need for reflection on ethical animal use in teaching and research activities. One of the major conclusions is that Laboratory Animal Science needs to emerge as a provider of expertise on the use of animals for didactic-scientific purposes.
