Resumo

The main outcrop related to the Rio da Estiva Taphoflorula is localized at the Km 139 of the BR 116 road, between Mafra and Papanduva (North of Santa Catarina State - Brazil). The fossiliferous layer is about 60 cm thick and is formed mainly by argillaceous shales included by thin carboniferous beds. In the geological section along the BR 116 road, the fossiliferous layer is placed in the mid1e part of the Rio Bonito Formation. Its age is related to the Artinskian or Kungurian time. The fossil distribution in the vertical sequence is related to the evolution of the depositional environernnt. The big fronds of Glossopteris and the quantity of seeds and fructifications are some característic aspects of this taphoflorula.
