ResumoThe recent results of Chakraborty (1988) and those of Fittipaldi and Siqueira (1986) for the critical temperature of the isotropic BEG model obtained by the use of an effective-field theory based on an extension of the Honmura Kaneyoshi techniques are criticised. Those two sets of results differ in a fundamental way, not only with each other, but with those of other theories. The reason for this is traced and it is shown that a correct treatment of the effective-field equations yields results close to those of the cluster variational method in a pair approximation, and other methods.
