Although the Greek version of the Vita Melaniae Iunioris has long been known, the existence of a Latin text was not recognized until Charles de Smedt's discovery of an incomplete version in 1889. Several years later, Cardinal Mariano Rampolla del Tindaro found a complete Latin text of the Vita in the Escorial Library, which he published in 1905 along with the Greek text, an Italian translation, and extensive commentary. A few years after the publication of Rampolla's monumental volume, however, G. Antolin unearthed in the Escorial Library yet another text of the Vita, of the same family as Rampolla's but earlier. Ten manuscripts of the Vita have now been discovered. Although several scholars since that time have expressed a wish for a new Latin edition based on the earlier Escorial text, none has been forthcoming until now. Scholars will be in debt to Laurence's collation that gives us this careful new edition.
