ResumoThe electroencephalographic (E.E.G.) findings in forty-seven records of twenty patients with herpes-simplex encephalitis were analysed. The E.E.G. in herpes-simplex encephalitis is not pathognomonic but reflects the severity of the illness and the location, rather than the type of lesion or its relation to time after onset of the illness. Changes described include: periodic delta bursts at fairly regular intervals; repetitive sharp peaks with one or more foci at intervals of from 0·5 to 3 seconds (usually temporal lobe); focal spiking, focal runs at 4-7 Hz; recruiting discharges at 9-12 Hz; and long-duration change of the whole record, irrespective of any stimulus.
