ResumoThe relationship between the physico-chemical characteristics and the optical properties or stability of solar selective surfaces has been studied by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (X.P.S.) and secondary ion mass spectroscopy (S.I.M.S.). The conversion coatings on austenitic as well as on ferritic stainless steels exhibit concentration gradients of metalloids (O and S) and metallic elements. Selectivity is maintained for a large variety of compositions but the thickness of the coating appears to be a rather critical parameter. Proeminent thermal stability and corrosion resistance can be obtained; they are of course dependent on the chemical composition of the coating.
