ResumoFor many years, health care providers have been reluctant to prescribe an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) to the adolescent. More recently, with the introduction of Mirena™, the IUCD has been revisited. Few studies have been performed on the use of IUCD in teens, but clearly the IUCD offers a long-acting method that facilitates successful and continuous contraception. Are we making the correct decision when prescribing the IUCD to this high-risk group? What are the challenges and specific considerations we must take into account? I have asked Dr. Jenna McNaught and Dr. Judith Lacy to provide us with a clinical opinion on the pros and cons of the use of an IUCD in the adolescent.
