In 1997, a research group was convened at ICN headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, to advise on priorities and ICN's role in nursing research, especially as these inform the World Health Organization's (WHO'S) Global Advisory Committee on Health Research. The regional reviews of nursing research that were presented for Africa by Tlou (1998), for Asia by Kim (1998). and for Europe by Tierny (1998) are the basis of the following synopsis. Tlou's description of the Africa research priorities derive from data from colleges of nursing and national nurses' associations throughout the Africa Region as well as from nurses' feedback at the ICN's 21st Congress in Vancouver, British Columbia, June 1997. Kim's data from eight Asian countries are based on country reports presented at a meeting convened by the WHO West Pacific Regional Office and organized by Yonsei University's WHO Collaborating Centre for Nursing/Midwifery. Tierney's report on nursing research in Europe is based on her experience in the United Kingdom and the Workgroup of European Nurse Researchers. The value of these three reports and the reprinted article from international Nursing Review (l998), by Miriam Hirschfeld, chief nurse scientist for the World Health Organization, describing priorities for a common nursing research agenda, cannot be overstated.
