ResumoTensile tests were performed on aluminium alloys prone to exhibit a Portevin-Le Chatelier effect, in order to compare the consequences of applying constant strain rates and constant stress rates. For all testing conditions known to produce different types of serration in constant-strain-rate tests, only one type, i.e. a step-like stress-strain curve, can be obtained in constant-stress-rate tests. Such a step is analogous to the appearance of an A-type serration in constant-strain-rate tests.
