Resumo

A simple pulsing unit which gates on an inexpensive side window photomultiplier for 10–300 nsec with a rise time of 9 nsec is described. Following a strong pulse of light, a signal change of 1 part in 104 relative to the main pulse can be detected. Under low light conditions, the noise level is such that single photoelectrons can be detected. The performance of the system is shown in a measurement of light induced echoes in the photomultiplier which are 1000-fold weaker than the main signal.
