Resumo

Abstract 1. 1. Multilayered spore coat of Bacillus subtilis consists primarily of highly hydrophobic proteins requiring harsh chemical treatments for solubilization. 2. 2. Soluble coat antigen is produced early during sporulation in form of a large precursor which is processed to yield a heterogeneous array of mature polypeptides assembled several hours later. 3. 3. A coat polypeptide of 12,200 daltons has been found to contain an unique amino acid composition similar to collagen class of structural proteins.
