ResumoIn a search for disturbances of ocular movements in the newborn infant, the incidence of lateral rectus muscle paresis was found to be one in 182. The lesion was on the right side in 80 per cent of the patients. In 34 of 35 infants, the deficit had disappeared by the age of 6 weeks. Apart from a relatively high proportion of primiparous mothers, no factors unfavorable to the fetus were identified. The influence of this lesion on the subsequent development of vision and of ocular movements in unknown. A long-term follow-up of these infants is in progress.
