Resumo

A study of the fatty acid contents from petroleum ether extracts of Phaseolus coccineus L and Gleditsia triacanthos L. is presented and discussed. The percentage of saponifiable lipid in each extract was less than 2.6 conforming with the arbitrary classification of the Leguminosae in terms of oil content. Because Gleditsia lacks seed starch it was expected that detailed differences from the fatty acid contents of Phaseolus might be found. In a comparison of all five extracts examined, oleic and palmitic acids were predominant but capric was also present in large amount while linolenic acid was absent from the seeds of Gleditsia. No unusual fatty acids were found.
