ResumoThe initial rates of reaction of a number of para- and meta-substituted toluenes with chromyl chloride in carbon tetrachloride solution have been measured and the results analyzed using Hammett's relation. The results are interpreted in terms of electrophilic attack by CrO 2 Cl 2 molecules. The reaction appears to be marked by an unusually large effect of ring substitution on the entropy of activation. The mechanistic significance of this observation is discussed.
