ResumoI. Introduction This review and catalogue of 120 earthquakes which originated in Scotland between 1916, January 1 and 1949, April 30, together with accounts of four other earthquakes, is part of a contribution to non-instrumental records of recent British seismic activity. Since the catalogue begins with earthquakes that took place in 1916, during which year the late Dr. C. Davison gave up the detailed non-instrumental recording of British tremors, it extends his list of these disturbances1 from then until 1949, so far as Scotland is concerned; confirms certain characteristics of Scottish earthquakes established by him;2 and draws attention to a number of others. Further, it supplements detailed studies of five outstanding Scottish earthquakes made by Dr. G. W. Tyrrell between 1925 and 1935,3 and includes summaries of similar detailed investigations carried out by the author between 1935 and 1949.4 Although most of the records mentioned here are non-instrumental, they include references to instrumental records where these are available. For the period 1916 to 1935 the non-instrumental records have been gathered from scientific and non-scientific periodicals, observatory records and private communications, but after September, 1935, have been derived chiefly from answers to appeals for seismological data made by the author in daily and weekly newspapers, radio broadcasts, questionnaires, letters and personal interviews. The instrumental records have been provided, from time to time, by the seismological observatories at Aberdeen, West Bromwich, Durham, Edinburgh, Kew, Oxford and Stonyhurst, through the courtesy of the Directors concerned, and by the Jaggar seismograph maintained at Comrie This 250-word extract was created in the absence of an abstract
