ResumoAmericium-241, curium-244 and where necessary for purposes of comparison, europium-152 and 154, were used to measure equilibrium constants in aqueous sulphate and oxalate systems at an ionic strength of 0·5. Partition into a polystyrene type 8 per cent cross-linked cation-exchange and/or into di-(2-ethylhexyl)-phosphoric acid in toluene was employed. 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 metal-ligand complexes were formed with both ligands and information was obtained on the partition of monosulphato cations into the ion-exchanger. The application of liquid-scintillation counting to such partition studies with α-emitters and the equilibrium constants obtained in this work are discussed.
