Resumo

Chemical oxidative polymerization of pyrrole is carried out by use of ferric chloride at various values of the initial oxidation potential. We found that the electrical conductivity depends heavily on the oxidation potential. Furthermore, the electrical conductivity of polypyrrole prepared in a binary solution was astonishingly enhanced compared to that obtained in a pure solution. In fact, one can obtain up to 328 S cm−1 for the maximum conductivity of pyrrole by controlling the oxidation potential in a binary solution of acetonitrile and methanol. We also found that the peak intensity of X-ray diffraction patterns and the reversibility of the redox property of polypyrrole are closely related to the oxidation potential. We conclude that the quality of polypyrrole including the electrical conductivity can be extremely enhanced if the oxidation potential is controlled in a refined manner by use of binary solvent systems.
