ResumoAbstract Lichens and tar spot fungus ( Rhytisma acerinum ) on sycamore ( Acer pseudoplatanus ) were used as indicators of pollution in order to map sulphur dioxide concentrations in the new Metropolitan County of Merseyside. The lichen scale of Gilbert ( 1970b ) was adapted, and a mapping technique based on the presence/absence of a few indicator species devised. The map of the inner limit of Rhytisma acerinum is provisional: work is in progress on the calibration of this species as an indicator of sulphur dioxide. The lichen and tar spot map fulfils a requirement for environmental planning in the new County.
