Resumo

The luminescence of several rare earth ions in the crystalline and glass modification of SrB4O7 is investigated, with a special stress on the transitions of the broad-band type. The luminescence of all the three divalent rare earth ions is reported and discussed. Yb2+ and Eu2+ show mainly broad-band emissions while Sm2+ shows line emissions of the 5D0 level to the 7Fj levels. The results lead to some conclusions about the factors which determine the luminescence efficiency in glasses.
