To the Editor.— Recently,The Journalfeatured a brief discussion of a stamp commemorating the original Dr Faust. 1 He became subject to a legend that he was in league with the devil and that he sold his soul to become young again. This prototypical figure is treated in many ways, some emphasizing the romantic aspects of his rejuvenation, some the philosophic aspects of age, and some the mysterious power of thought. The bare-bones description of Faust and the stamp fail to do justice to the inspirational quality of the legend. Not only Gounod wrote an opera based on the subject, but also Spohr, Busoni, Berlioz, and Boito, to name only some of those still heard. Thomas Mann wrote a novel based on the subject, Wagner an overture, and many others poems and stories. The real Faust was a contemporary of Johann Weyer, the father of psychiatry, and lived in
