Resumo

Nicolas-Louis Vauquelin discovered chromium by boiling crocoite (lead Chromate) with potassium carbonate. Reduction of the yellow salt with carbon produced a metal that he named “chromium” because of its color. He also found that beryl (beryllium aluminum silicate) superficially resembled aluminum oxide, but it was insoluble in alkali and did not form alum. He originally called it “glucina,” but it was later renamed “beryllia.” The metal beryllium was isolated 30 years later by Friedrich Wöhler (1800–1882), a German chemist.
