Resumo

IgG was found to be the main immunoglobulin of sow serum and colostrum but was only a minor component of milk immunoglobulins, IgA being the major immunoglobulin of milk. Levels of IgG, IgA and IgM were measured in piglet serum from birth to 16 weeks of age. Considerable variation in immunoglobulin absorption occurred between pigs and between litters. IgA and IgM levels in piglet serum fell rapidly with mean half-lives of 3.5 and 4.5 days, respectively. IgG levels fell more slowly with a mean half-life of 12–14 days. A mature serum immunoglobulin profile had not been attained in 16-week-old pigs.
