Intercellular cytoplasmic connections in Ctenocladus circinnatus Borzi (Chlorophyceae) with possible ecological significance

ResumoA filamentous Chlorophycean, Ctenocladus circinnatus Borzi was examined at the ultrastructural level and found to have pit-like intercellular cytoplasmic connections. This is the first documentation of cytoplasmic continuity within this rare genus. The presence of pit-like structures in this genus may give further evidence for its close affinity to members of the Trentepohliales. The ecological significance of intercellular communication in Ctenocladus is discussed in relationship to the rigorous environment it occupies.
