L’identification du groupe sanguin ABO a été une étape majeure dans la maîtrise de la thérapeutique transfusionnelle. À l’origine de cette découverte est Karl Landsteiner (1868–1843). L’article retrace la carrière difficile de ce savant d’origine autrichienne, naturalisé américain, et présente les circonstances dans lesquelles il réalisa plusieurs découvertes capitales qui constituèrent autant de tournants majeurs dans l’évolution de l’immuno-hématologie. The discovery of ABO blood group was a major step in mastering transfusion therapy. Karl Landsteiner (1868–1843) was the author of this discovery. This paper retraces the hard career of this American scientist of Austrian origin, and describes the circumstances that led his research to the discoveries, which were turning points in the history of the immunology.
