Resumo

The N.R.T.L. equation is suitable for the description of complex phase behaviour as expressed by the Gibbs free energy of mixing of binary systems with limited miscibility. The determination of the parameters from the miscibility data can be very time consuming and give rise to different solutions depending upon the initial guess, when a search method is used. The aim of this paper is to reduce the effort of the determination of the parameters and to predict the exact number of sets of energy parameters at any value of the non randomness parameter α. For this purpose the areas where no solutions are allowable, are delimited in the G12, G21 plane. The shapes of the curves, on which the solutions are situated, are qualitatively determined in the areas where solutions are allowable. In this way it is possible to predict the exact number of energy parameters corresponding to any value of the non randomness parameter α. A limiting value for this parameter follows directly from the method. The selection of the physically significant sets of parameters has to be based on thermodynamic considerations.
