ResumoHighly purified platelet factor 4 (PF4) was found to be a potent stimulator of human granulocyte elastase activity against native elastin and solubilized α elastin. Heparin neutralized this stimulation of elastolysis by PF4, but independently stimulated granulocyte elastase activity. Chondroitin sulfate, a constituent of the PF4 carrier molecule, also stimulated granulocyte elastase activity. The stimulation of granulocyte elastase by PF4 occurs at known serum concentrations of PF4.
