Resumo

The adrenal response to surgical stress of Bantus and Europeans living in the same climate has been investigated. Fifty-three Bantus and 53 Europeans were compared as regards 17-hydroxycorticosteroid urinary excretion and eosinophil counts, before and after surgical operations. The daily excretion of 17(OH)CS in normal subjects was higher in European than in Bantu males. No significant difference has been found in females. Urinary excretion of 17(OH)CS in the 72 post-operative hours was about 30 per cent. lower in Bantus than in Europeans, and this was irrespective of sex. The eosinophilic response showed the same trend as the 17(OH)CS excretion. Some possible causes of this difference of response to surgical stress are discussed.
