ResumoThis paper describes the basic principles of computerised knowledge based decision support systems and shows how they can be applied to aid in certain aspects of the design and planning of surface mining operations. The paper concentrates on two examples concerning the use of such tools in equipment selection for hydraulic excavators and draglines. These examples illustrate the importance of identifying and installing the pertinent knowledge together with the application of multiple software systems in their operation.
