Resumo

A time-of-flight spectrometer to measure the neutron energy spectrum and the angular distribution of elastically and inelastically scattered fast neutrons is described. The spectrometer is of the associated-charged-particle type. The time resolution of the spectrometer is 2 × 10−9 sec. The ultimate resolution of this spectrometer is less than 5 × 10−10 sec; present limitations are due to photomultiplier quality. The linearity of the spectrometer has been determined over the range of 0–100 mμsec. A typical inelastic scattered spectrum from 14.6 MeV neutron bombardment of carbon is presented. A level in C12 at 10 MeV excitation energy is reported. Other groups of neutrons corresponding to the ground state and the 4.43 MeV level are also reported.
