ResumoCatalysis of the oxidation reaction CO+12O2→CO2 by metal clusters is examined by gas phase ion chemistry and mass spectrometry techniques. Small platinum cluster anions, Ptn− (n=3–6), are effective catalysts for the reaction under thermal conditions. The proposed reaction mechanism involves atomic oxygen chemisorbed on the clusters.
