Resumo

A new thermophilic, coccoid methanogen from a potato waste digester, Methanogenium thermophilicum strain Ratisbona is described. Single cells possess one flagellum and several pili. The optimum growth temperature is 58 °C and the minimum doubling time 3.4 h. Methane is formed from H2: CO2 or formate. The G+C content of the DNA is 57 mol %. The new isolate is closely related to Methanogenium thermophilicum DSM 2373 and the H2-oxidizing methanogen of Ferguson and Mah (1983), which we assign to Methanogenium thermophilicum as strain Los Angeles. The species description of Methanogenium thermophilicum is emended.
