ResumoMethylamine adsorption on Pt(111) has been studied at room temperature using ARUPS and thermal desorption. Thermal desorption indicates partial dissociation at room temperature resulting in low temperature desorption of methane. Further heating results in almost complete decomposition, via two pathways (similar to our previous results from sym-dimethyl hydrazine). One path yields N(a) and CH3(a), and eventually N2(g) and hydrocarbons; the other leads to H2, HCN and C2N2 desorption. Experiments with CD3NH2 show a stepwise mechanism for the dehydrogenation path, starting with NH bond cleavage. The ARUPS at room temperature is dominated by molecular methylamine: this is bonded to the surface via the lone pair on N.
