ResumoFour of five Romanian orphans adopted by U.S. families were found to have chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection after negative test results were reported in Romania before adoption. Another child with known HBV infection was found to be coinfected with hepatitis D virus. There is a high incidence of HBV infection in Romanian orphans, and results of tests for HBV are unreliable in Romania.
