ResumoAt the 1973 American Medical Association Conference on the Education of Emergency Physicians, non-emergency physicians met officially for the first time to discuss the possibility that emergency medicine might emerge as the next medical specialty. It did indeed attain that status, and it did so within a comparatively short time: the American Board of Medical Specialties recognized emergency medicine in September 1979, the American Board of Emergency Medicine offered its certifying examination for the first time in 1980, and there are now 248 board-certified emergency physicians.
