ResumoThe viscosity of carbon black dispersed pitches has been studied using a cone-plate type rheometer. Temperature dependence of the viscosity of monolithic pitch (Ashland 170) was described well by the WLF equation, while a sizable deviation was observed in the pitch-carbon black dispersed system at high temperatures (>125°C) as a result of strong interaction between carbon black particles. Dependence on the volume fraction of carbon black was analyzed using the Mooney equation for colloidal suspension. In addition to these rheological studies, the effect of carbon black on the microtexture of carbonized products of this system was investigated.
