The population of atonic Cs (62PJ) levels in the vapour phase by 632.8 nm tuned HeNe laser radiation has been investigated. It is shown that the main contribution to the population of these levels is due to spontaneous predissociation of the C1Πu state of the Cs2 molecule which proceeds adiabatically.
