ResumoWorlds away from the Earth, 44 light years away in the Andromeda constellation, three Jupiter‐sized planets are orbiting Upsilon Andromedae,a bright star 1.2 times the mass of our Sun and two‐thirds of its 4.5 billion year age. This dramatic discovery, jointly announced by scientists from four research institutions on April 15, is the first planetary system ever found around a normal star, aside from our Solar System. The finding suggests that planetary systems may be abundant in the Milky Way galaxy, and may indicate a new era of extrasolar planetary exploration and study, according to some scientists involved in the discovery.
