Although these drugs are well tolerated, serious adverse effects may occur. All members of this class may cause rhabdomyolysis, particularly when combined with gemfibrozil.We report six cases of severe rhabdomyolysis in patients taking cerivastatin without concomitant gemfibrozil. The patients were symptomatic (creatine kinase levels >5000 U/L) and were hospitalized with no other clear causes of rhabdomyolysis (Table).
