ResumoCalcium has key roles as main mineral in the skeleton and as a second messenger. The ability to adapt to low calcium intake provides some protection, but not adequate protection against chronic low calcium intakes. One contributing consequence of prolonged inadequacy is osteoporosis. Dietary requirements protect against inadequacies but not exceeding the upper recommended level protects against toxicity.
