ResumoOBSERVATIONS ON THE LIFE-HISTORY OF THE SUBTERRANEAN AMPHIPOD NIPHARGUS AQUILEX AQUILEX SCHIÖDTE BY T. GLEDHILL and M. LADLE Freshwater Biological Association, The River Laboratory, East Stoke, Wareham, Dorset, England INTRODUCTION Some of the superficial gravel beds of the River Oberwater in the New Forest, Hampshire, England, hold large, permanent populations of the subterranean amphipod Niphargus aquilex aquilex Schiödte, 1855. Although data are available on the biology and behaviour of some species (Ginet, 1955) there is little informa- tion on the seasonal variation of Niphargus populations. Regular quantitative sampling of Niphargus, the phreaticolous water-mite Neoacarus hibernicus Hal- bert and several species
