ResumoThe tragedy of suicide in children and adolescents is considered a national and global phenomenon. There are approximately 900,000 suicides in the world each year, including as many as 200,000 adolescents and young adults. Suicide rates vary from country to country depending on local factors, including reporting methods. Causes of suicide include depression; abuse; loss of friends (including boyfriend or girlfriend); academic failure; social isolation; and substance abuse. The link between use of antidepressants and suicidal ideation is discussed, and concepts of management are also considered.
