ResumoThe musical piece of Francisco Manuel da Silva, which is the Brazilian National Hymn, and the several lyrics concerned to it, from the Empire to the Republic, were object of historiography of Brazilian music. those studies were developed under a nationalistic view and considered both, composer and his work, as heroes. In this paper, our main goal was a discussion about that historiography, showing a new history of the hymn under three historical contexts: the Abdication of Pedro I (1831), the Coronation of Pedro II (1841) and the early republican decades.
